Lessons From Fashion’s Free Culture

Johanna Blakley spends much of her time exploring how our entertainment interacts with our political, commercial and social habits. She is especially interested in the surprising impact of intellectual property rights on innovation, organizing conferences around the lack of creative ownership in fashion as well as technology and the ownership of creative content. Copyright law’s grip on film, music and software barely touches the fashion industry … and fashion benefits in both innovation and sales, says Johanna Blakley. At TEDxUSC 2010, she talks about what all creative industries can learn from fashion’s free culture.

The J. Jill Compassion Fund

The life of starving writer is no more after I had a job opportunity at J. Jill, a woman’s retailer here in San Antonio. J. Jill is a store that feeds the needs of stylish women 35 years and up, however, being 22 I can definitely say I plan on making some purchases and mixing it into my existing wardrobe. The clothes is versatile, open to self expression but still very comfortable and easy to wear. The company also has a really great fund that doesn’t get enough attention, The J. Jill Compassion Fund.

The J. Jill Compassion Fund was established in June 2002 and is the central depository for philanthropic giving by the J. Jill Group. The Compassion Fund is committed to providing support to community-based organizations that help poor and homeless women become self-sufficient. Since 2002, J. Jill compassion fund grants have supported more than 25 organizations that help women to empower themselves and change their lives. What this means is that every J. Jill item bought should never have an end.

By purchasing a J. Jill item you have the opportunity to take that item back to a J. Jill store and donate it to the J. Jill Compassion Fund. That item will then be collected and given to the Battered Women’s & Children’s Shelter of San Antonio. In return for your donation you will receive 10% off a new item for each item donated. Our store is looking for gently used summer, fall and winter donations to help these women stay cool for the rest of the summer and be prepared for the cooler months. If you or anyone you know has gently used J. Jill in their closet, it is time to purge for a cause! You can take your donations to the address listed below. If you haven’t ever shopped J. Jill, I highly suggest you stop by the store. Hope to see you and please spread the word about this great cause.

American Woman

Halston5

The American woman is not so typical anymore. She can cook up a storm and be domestic but such duties do not take away from her sense of fashion and style. She is strong and confident in her tastes and ideas when it comes to clothes and will not settle for less than high quality. The American woman is glamorous in all that she does. Many designers and great brands have contributed to the American sense of fashion but one of my favorite brands to represent the American woman is Halston Heritage.

Famous for its Studio 54 glamour, Halston personified American fashion in the 1970s. In 2009, the diffusion line of Halston Heritage was born, and with it came a new generation of celebrity followers including Sarah Jessica Parker who wore a Halston Heritage dress in Sex and The City 2 and  celebrity Chloe Sevgny. The luxuriously fabulous evening wear, amazing silk jumpsuits and vibrant jersey dresses, exude an effortless glamour that is perfect for the modern woman yet has a timeless look. Halston Heritage is available at retailers like Neiman Marcus and via retailer sites like Net-A-Porter.
