Interview With FashionSchools.org

I was recently contacted by a wonderful website called FashionSchools.org. This website is designed to make the search for the right school easy for students interested in fashion, design, merchandising and so much more. In the interview I was able to give some advice about breaking into fashion writing and talk about my career as a Fashion Editor. Visit the website and take a look at the interview.

H&M Design Award Winner

HMwinner

We recently reported on the H&M Design Award competition that stretched across six countries with a total of fourteen up and coming designers from some of the most prestigious fashion schools in the world. All in hopes of winning a cash prize and the opportunity to showcase their collection at Stockholm Fashion Week.

After making and displaying their collections to the panel of distinguished judges the winner has been announced: Stine Riis, a 28 year old student from the London College of Fashion.

Stine was chosen by a grand jury which included fashion designer Christopher Kane, noted fashion journalists Hilary Alexander and Kristopher Arden Houser, fashion blogger Susie Lau, H&M’s creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch and H&M’s head of design, Ann-Sofie Johansson.

She received major praise for the use of color and creating a collection with a strong, yet subtle undertone. The collection is young but sophisticated and is ready-to-wear. Fifteen pieces from the collection will be made available in select H&M stores worldwide in September. You can expect to see much more of this young designer, check out her winners portrait video and her stunning collection hit the runway!

Jason Wu for Target

Target has added yet another great designer to their list of cheap chic collections. Jason Wu recently unveiled the lookbook for his latest collection to be sold in Target stores nationwide. With Target’s sales of their designer collections not reaching predicted goals it will be interesting to see how Target plans to address the still steep pricing issue. The entire Jason Wu collection is priced under  a reasonable $60.

The collection features French inspired pieces with pleated skirts, nautical inspired dresses and shorts. It also includes  wristlets and shoulder bags for the girl on the go and scarves for a little extra style. The collection will be available to customers in Target stores on February 5. “My goal was not to duplicate anything from my main collection,” Wu explains. “Instead I designed completely new clothes and accessories that reflect my taste and have a voice of their own.”

DIY: 3 Step Handbag

A clutch is a fashion basic, it is the perfect size to hold just what a girl needs. It goes wherever we need it to go and that lovely little wristlet always makes it a breeze to hold, right!? WRONG! I will admit I am a fan of a clutch and it is my go to handbag when I’m heading for a night out. The one thing I hate, hate, hate about it is having to hold it for 5 hours while it starts to feel a bit like a ball and chain after so long hanging off your wrist. There is a simple solution to this that can go right with you, a belt! That’s right, a belt can easily transform your clutch into an easy to wear bag in three simple steps.

You will need:
A clutch
A thin, matching belt

I chose to use my Michael Kors clutch and a gold belt I found in my closet. So long that the colors coordinate you can use any belt and clutch combination.
